Mess Hall was an experimental cultural space housed in a Rogers Park storefront in Chicago from 2003-2013. Drawing on the counter-histories of self-organizing and autonomous spaces, we were inspired by the communes of the 1960s, the intentional communities of the 1970s, the artist-run galleries and DIY infoshops of the 1980s, and the social centers of the 1990s. Over the ten years of its existence, Mess Hall hosted hundreds of events, shows, meals, lessons, parties and meetings. The founding keyholders were Brett Bloom, Ava Bromberg, Salem Collo-Julin, Marianne Fairbanks, Marc Fischer, Sam Gould, Jane Palmer, and myself.
