The Journey West grew out of an interest with the exploding cultures and economies of tourism in China, a fascination shared with my collaborator for this project, the new media artist Stephanie Rothenberg. This was our effort to reach—or perhaps help to create—the critical tourist hailing from China. Beginning with a travel office near the Drum Tower in Beijing and later moving online, The Journey West offered a selection of four premium packages covering different parts of the United States. The Journey West made imaginable a new level of engaged touring for the Chinese traveler who wishes for a well-researched and politically informed American tour, and expects some excellent Chinese food, as well.
